YOUR BRIEF
When considering a shepherd hut or a garden room, there's a list of things to think about first. You will, no doubt, already have a defined idea of what you'll be using your hut for. A home office, garden retreat, artist's studio, pool house, overspill accommodation or somewhere to let out to paying guests. This will help form the initial brief, and the more we know from our first conversations, the better.

PLANNING PERMISSION
Because a shepherd hut is on wheels, and therefore moveable, it generally does not need planning permission if it is within the curtilage of your property. However, we strongly advise that you speak to your local planning authority first, as there may be anomalies where you live.

LOCATION
Where are you going to put your shepherd hut? How solid is the ground (will it support a two tonne plus structure), and does it need levelling? If you'd like electricity and plumbing, will the shepherd hut be close to essential facilities? Natural light is important, and so are the views. Would you like to face east or west if your sunrise or sunset views are particularly spectacular? How easy is site access?

EXTERIOR
Would you like your hut to be clad in wood, wriggly tin, or a combination of both? How many windows and where would you like the door? How you intend to use the internal space will help inform these decisions.

INTERIOR
You may want something simple which you can decorate and furnish yourself. Or are you looking to have a full kitchen and / or bathroom in your hut? How would you like to light and heat it? Underfloor heating, wall heating or a wood burning stove?
